A simple example of NLP (again so I can understand it) would be to look at a person who smokes and to compare them with a person who does not smoke (or even better a person who has stopped smoking). NLP would try to understand the behaviour of the non-smoker and try to teach others to do the same.
NLP uses “modelling” (another big name for a simple thing). Modelling is taking the behaviour and beliefs of someone who has achieved success and finding a way of reproducing that proven success in others.
Stop Smoking -Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. (CBT)
Stop Smoking CBT takes note of a persons (for us read smokers) unwanted thoughts, beliefs or attitudes, it then focuses on these and looks at the behaviour which results from them.
CBT works on the theory that negative thoughts and behaviour have been learnt over long periods of time.
Stop Smoking CBT would try to identify the thinking which leads us to problem behaviour like smoking, even though we know its bad for us. We can then learn to change our thinking to lead us to changing our smoking behaviour.

CBT tells us that if we do not confront these feelings we can enter a negative spiral, which makes our situation worse. An example of this would be a smoker who says;
“I tried to stop smoking once and failed, I’ll never quit now”
